Property of the Month April: Christiania Residence, Zermatt

Zermatt is an increasingly popular summer holiday destination thanks to its magnificent scenery and plethora of outdoor activities. Just a stone’s throw from the centre of town and only 500m from the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, the ultra-luxurious Christiania Residence combines five apartments. They are all wonderfully spacious with large super-king size beds or they can be split into twins. Expect neutral interiors with contemporary, wooden touches, alongside comfy, soft furnishings. This is a gorgeous haven in the heart of the Alps, with a modern feel. The spa facilities include an outdoor hot tub on the ground floor, as well as a large gym and massage room.

Christiania Penthouse, a breathtaking hideaway

A lift runs through the building. Starting at the top, and set over two floors, the Christiania Penthouse boasts a total of seven bedrooms. There are five bedrooms with en-suite or private shower/bathrooms, whilst two of the bedrooms share a bathroom, and these bedrooms can be closed off from the rest of the floor if you wish to make a family suite. The master bedroom has incredible views of the Matterhorn, a wood-burning fireplace, en-suite bathroom, a walk-in wardrobe and a spacious terrace.

Upstairs, the spacious and elegant open-plan sitting and dining area leads out onto the large balcony, where you can see the majestic Matterhorn glittering with golden light. Zermatt is a trekker’s nirvana, with breathtaking scenery including a ski area of 360 kilometres in winter, and 400 kilometres of established hiking route in the summer months. Take your walking shoes and embark on one of the trails that pass through the lush green botanical route that runs from Diesse to Lamboing. The penthouse apartment also has a private sauna which is perfect for loosening aching muscles after a long day skiing or exploring flower-filled meadows, pine forests, and alpine trails. Or, opt to snuggle up in the cinema room after an action-packed day spotting chirping marmots and golden eagles.

Christiania Apartment 7, a family paradise

The perfect spot from which to explore the Alps, Christiania Apartment 7 enjoys six spacious bedrooms, and open-plan living and dining areas. Four of the bedrooms, all of which boast glorious en-suite bathrooms, have beautiful terraces which have spectacular views. Each bedroom can be made up as either twins or a double making it ideal for a family or group of friends.

To be sure, Zermatt is a great summer destination for families. From the valley station in Zermatt take the funicular to Sunnegga, where you’ll find the ‘Wolli adventure park’. Just a few minutes’ walk from Sunnegga, start your day at the marmot-watching station and embark on the themed trail that reveals charming facts about these adorable mammals, before stopping off for a sunbathing session and picnic lunch at the beach and BBQ areas. Adults can relax by the stunning mountain lake and even take a refreshing dip with fantastic Matterhorn views; the ideal family day out in nature.

Christiania Apartment 4, a couple’s retreat

A one-bedroom chalet, Christiania Apartment 4 provides a rare opportunity to rent a spacious and luxurious apartment for two people. Perfect for a couple who want to relax and unwind in style, guests staying here can enjoy Zermatt’s celebration of Alpine culture throughout the summer months, with daily musical performances from folk groups at the train station square throughout July and August. Festivals dedicated to age-old local traditions allow visitors a real insight into the heritage of the region, such as the Folklore festival, Stafelalp festival and of course Swiss National Day.

Christiania Apartment 3, a hiker’s haven

In summer, Christiania Apartment 3 acts as the perfect hideaway for those wanting to explore the area. Housing a bright, airy living and dining area and three beautifully-appointed bedrooms, it strikes the perfect balance between alpine chic and modern contemporary. With old-fashioned wooden chalets and cobbled alleys, Zermatt retains its picture-perfect, historic character and has plenty of shops and cafés from which to pick up your morning croissant. In this car-free zone, the window boxes are brimming with flowers. For the adventurers, here you can ski 365 days of the year, with the Klein Matterhorn offering 21 kilometres of skiing slopes, making it Europe’s biggest and highest elevation summer skiing region. When conditions permit, this is the chosen training area for many champion skiers in the summer, and you’re likely to catch a glimpse of them as you cruise around the sunny slopes.
